Snowed In: Five Great Winter Movies to Watch on Satellite TV

For those who are trapped indoors because of nasty weather that's spreading across the country, there is sometimes a tendency to choose entertainment that is designed to distract. Rather than focus on the fact that there are gigantic piles of snow gathering outside of one's home, the logic goes, it makes more sense to choose a movie about vacationing to an island or something that will be entertaining and sun-soaked. And while this does work part of the time, it's not the best way to actually accept the fact that the mercury is plummeting and that there are icicles forming. And sometimes, that's an essential thing to do, in order to properly survive winter.

So for those who are snowed in with nowhere to go, consider using satellite tv and its extensive collection of channels not to escape from reality, but to find something that puts a more positive spin on it. Here are five great winter movies to watch when the weather outside is truly frightful.

#1 - Slap Shot. Paul Newman cursing is one of the weirdest things about this underrated classic that sports fans tend to love, but the fact is that "Slap Shot" is a great film that doesn't get nearly as much praise as it deserves. When a factory town is shutting down its main source of income and the local bush league hockey team might get shipped out, a whole bunch of stops are pulled out, including dirty fighting, to keep fans interested and potentially net the team a future in sunny Florida. It's a must-see film that's perfect for a chilly night.

#2 - Prancer. Potentially the best and most underrated Christmas movie of all time, there's no reason to not enjoy "Prancer" as long as it's chilly outside. With a great performance from the young lead actress and plenty of shots of sledding and other winter activities, it's a heartwarming film that will likely have viewers with tears welling up in their eyes by the end.

#3 - Let the Right One In. Something about winter calls for a vampire movie, and this classic brooding picture from Sweden was remade, but the original is the one worth checking out on satellite tv. With snow and ice everywhere and plenty of sequences that make use of the creepy woods around a small Swedish town, it's a haunting story of being bullied as a child as much as it also manages to capture how things feel when winter is a little bit too long.

#4 - March of the Penguins. It's a good pick for those with youngsters, something that looks great on an HDTV screen, and a fantastic way to look at how animals can be resilient in the face of far worse winter weather than anything happening anywhere in the country. Plus, it's worthwhile just for a glimpse at those northern lights swirling above the colony of penguins just trying to brave the bad weather.

#5 - Fargo. Because whoever one happens to be freezing, things have to be better than how they are unfolding in this epic Cohen Brothers black comedy, one that is actually based on a true story and that managed to garner the directing duo a great deal of praise, considering how hilariously funny the film manages to be, despite the subject matter.
